COMMON SENSE IS MAKING A GOOD DECISION WITHOUT THE BENEFIT OF SPECIFIC TRAINING OR EXPERIENCE

Good judgement is making a good decision based on specific training and experience. Did Barack Obama reach the right decision about the Iraq invasion because of common sense or good judgement ?

In October 2002 Barack Obama uttered the following words

” Now let me be clear – I suffer no illusions about Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal man. A ruthless man. A man who butchers his own people to secure his own power. He has repeatedly defied UN resolutions, thwarted UN inspection teams, developed chemical and biological weapons, and coveted nuclear capacity.

He’s a bad guy. The world, and the Iraqi people, would be better off without him.

But I also know that Saddam poses no imminent and direct threat to the United States, or to his neighbors, that the Iraqi economy is in shambles, that the Iraqi military a fraction of its former strength, and that in concert with the international community he can be contained until, in the way of all petty dictators, he falls away into the dustbin of history.

I know that even a successful war against Iraq will require a US occupation of undetermined length, at undetermined cost, with undetermined consequences. I know that an invasion of Iraq without a clear rationale and without strong international support will only fan the flames of the Middle East, and encourage the worst, rather than best, impulses of the Arab world, and strengthen the recruitment arm of al-Qaeda.

I am not opposed to all wars. I’m opposed to dumb wars.”

From his experience of having lived in a foreign country (a Muslim country at that) , Obama could appreciate that foreigners ,especially Arabs, might see things differently than Americans. When Obama studied government and world affairs at Columbia University, he did so already having that perspective.

Politics is everywhere- in schools, churches, hospitals, the workplace… As of October 2002 Obama had navigated the politics of being a community organizer in Chicago, running the Harvard Law Review and 7 years of being an Illinois State Senator.

There were probably many people who could have arrived at the conclusion that invading Iraq was a bad idea from common sense alone.

A. After the world , including Arabs, had risen up as one to throw Saddam out of Kuwait, was Iraq going to take on the USA which spent more on military than the next 12 countries COMBINED?

B. Even if indeed Saddam had acquired a few WMDs, would it be any match for the massive nuclear arsenal of the USA?

C. If 19 Arabs (none of them Iraqis BTW) were so angry at the USA that they would give up their lives to make the statement of 9/11, how would moderate Arabs and others feel when the USA invaded an oil rich Arab country which had not attacked the USA and was no danger to the USA.

SO WHETHER BECAUSE OF COMMON SENSE OR GOOD JUDGEMENT SOME PEOPLE GOT IT RIGHT (OBAMA, DEAN, GORE, GRAHAM, MOST OF THE WORLD OUTSIDE THE USA)

SOME PEOPLE GOT IT WRONG (BUSH, CHENEY, HILLARY, KERRY, EDWARDS, BIDEN, McCAIN, GIULLIANI)

YOU DECIDE
