The average Air Force pilot flew 100 combat missions over Vietnam. Many Naval aviators flew over 300

McCAIN FLEW 23 COMBAT MISSIONS OVER VIETNAM DURING A TOTAL OF ABOUT 20 HOURS OVER ENEMY TERRITORY.

Does that make him a war hero?

Many grunts on the ground spent many thousands of hours in combat under conditions that would have made a prison cell seem pretty good.

  1. I think you would find that a NVA prison cell is far worse than you or I can accurately imagine.

  2. jonolan I can imagine that being shot at in sweltering, insect infested jungles for hours could be worse yet.

Of course, there is some reason to believe that as the son of the Admiral McCain may have been treated better than he claims. His combat record has been distorted. Maybe his POW experience is not as he tells it. He did get away with a lot of shit at the USNA.
