McCain is an avid gambler. Wes Gullett, a close friend who worked for McCain for years, told me that they used to play craps in Las Vegas in fourteen-hour stints, standing at the tables from 10 a.m. to midnight

Research has shown that problem gamblers have an impairment in decision-making ability and a diminished capacity to evaluate future consequences.

Add that to the fact that even hero war hero status is open to debate, and he is weak on economics and Iraqi politics, and John McCain becomes VERY SCAREY!

  1. To DENY something that is and has been very clear for years for political reasons is plain dishonest.

I’m referring to trying to paint McCain’s “war hero” status as debatable. The FACTS are that he WAS held for many years as a POW, he DID endure that in service to his country, and THAT constitutes a war hero – in any book!

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a “wild-eyed” McCain supporter. I’d much rather have a former governer, etc. (someone who has actually run a government on an executive level) in the race. But on both sides, the debate needs to focus on TRUTHS, not half-baked attempts at discrediting a candidate (as you are doing in this “war hero” debate). That goes for anyone who tries to scare others by calling Obama a “muslim” as well.

Please, stick to the facts – not smear tactics.

  2. Carey,

What do you think about McCain’s gambling and anger-management problems?

Does that mean ANY POW IS QUALIFIED TO BE PREZ?

  3. I think its a blame shame Americans even entertaining the IDEA of electing that Muslim lover as president. Those folks have saw dust in their heads! There is ONLY one canidate athat is JOHN MCCAIN! There might be snow on the mountain and at the base of the flag pole but there is FIRE in the valley!

John Mccain because JESUS says so!

    A. Obama is not a muslim

    B. McCain is a war survivor and little else. He got into and through the Naval Academy because his father and grandfather were 4 star admirals. His juvenile hot dog antics caused among other things: the deaths of 168 sailors, loss of over 20 US warplanes, and almost sunk the USS Forrestal. When he was a POW ,he sang like a canary to get special treatment. His violent profanity laden outbursts at other Senators , his superstions and his compulsive gambling tell me that John McCain is emotion ally unstable.

  5. gasdocpol,

As it common in your responses, you are characterizing my comments with an “exclusion of the middle” tactic. You assume that since I spoke in defense of McCain’s military record that I assume that any POW is fit to be President. That’s not my point at all – just that for us, on the outside, to speak so matter-of-factly and flippantly about POW status and the horror it must have been, without realizing the determination and dedication it had to have taken to withstand it successfully, is to short-change anyone who has done so.

And regarding the gambling and anger issues – you’ve given one “quote” – not an airtight set of evidence to show either. However, I will concede this – I don’t think McCain was the strongest candidate who began this race (translation: there are many others I’d RATHER have seen in this position at this point for the Republicans) – but I think he’s the strongest candidate left in the race. Thus, he gets my vote…

Thank you for admitting that the fact that McCain was a POW does not qualify him to be President. I have never diminished the horror of being a POW. What I have said was that it did not qualify him to be President. SO BASICICALLY I THINK WE ARE IN AGREEMENT THERE.

It is generally admitted by even McCain himself that he has an anger management issue and that he likes gambling as well as being superstitious. If you cannot confirm or disprove these questions via google, I would be glad to do it for you.

I would not be questioning McCain’s military record if it were not the biggest reason that people give in support for his candidacy. If this were such a compelling factor, it should be looked at. If what is being tauted about McCain’s military record is true, discussion could only help him.

The Law touches on virtually all aspects of human behavior. Obama was Magna Cum Laude and President of the Harvard Law School Review. That tells me that he is booksmart and can organize facts and present them logically. In 2002 he took generally available information about the proposed Iraq invasion and without military training or experience he had the COMMON SENSE AND JUDGEMENTto be able to organize, prioritize and come to the correct conclusion that had eluded those with decades of “experience”and years of training.

McCain got into and through the Naval Academy and flight school because he had a father and grandfather who were 4 star admirals. His military career was at best a checkerboard. He managed to make a carrer in the Senate out of a perceived war hero record which is debateable.
