OBAMA SAID 2+2=4 THE IRAQ WAR WOULD BE A DUMB WAR; HILLARY SAID MAYBE 2+2=4 WE SHOULD INVADE; McCAIN SAID 2+2=5 WE MUST INVADE

THE FOLLOWING IS WHAT: OBAMA, HILLARY AND McCAIN SAID IN OCTOBER 2003

OBAMA

I suffer no illusions about Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal man. A ruthless man. A man who butchers his own people to secure his own power. He has repeatedly defied UN resolutions, thwarted UN inspection teams, developed chemical and biological weapons, and coveted nuclear capacity.

He’s a bad guy. The world, and the Iraqi people, would be better off without him.

But I also know that Saddam poses no imminent and direct threat to the United States, or to his neighbors, that the Iraqi economy is in shambles, that the Iraqi military a fraction of its former strength, and that in concert with the international community he can be contained until, in the way of all petty dictators, he falls away into the dustbin of history.

I know that even a successful war against Iraq will require a US occupation of undetermined length, at undetermined cost, with undetermined consequences. I know that an invasion of Iraq without a clear rationale and without strong international support will only fan the flames of the Middle East, and encourage the worst, rather than best, impulses of the Arab world, and strengthen the recruitment arm of al-Qaeda.

I am not opposed to all wars. I’m opposed to dumb wars.

HILLARY
I come to this decision from the perspective of a Senator from New York who has seen all too closely the consequences of last year’s terrible attacks on our nation. In balancing the risks of action versus inaction, I think New Yorkers who have gone through the fires of hell may be more attuned to the risk of not acting. I know that I am.

So it is with conviction that I support this resolution as being in the best interests of our nation. A vote for it is not a vote to rush to war; it is a vote that puts awesome responsibility in the hands of our President and we say to him – use these powers wisely and as a last resort. And it is a vote that says clearly to Saddam Hussein – this is your last chance – disarm or be disarmed.

McCAIN
“Because I know that as successful as I believe we will be, and I believe that the success will be fairly easy, we will still lose some American young men or women.” [CNN, 9/24/02]

“We’re not going to get into house-to-house fighting in Baghdad. We may have to take out buildings, but we’re not going to have a bloodletting of trading American bodies for Iraqi bodies.” [CNN, 9/29/02]

“But the point is that, one, we will win this conflict. We will win it easily.” [MSNBC, 1/22/03

  1. Doc,
I am sincerely hoping Obama is playing a campaign strategy that is leaning right for votes. I am hearing the winds of war as to Afghanistan. That country represents a Vietnam times two, squared. The Russians could no more beat those cave dwellers with Italian guns than we could the VC. It is a black hole with no end. We need to get our energy elsewhere and clear out with UN sactions and Nato unanamously supporting an intervention if Al-Qaida is re-emerging.

What they fail to realize is that our enemies populate in small numbers in twenty countries on four continents. We can’t be everywhere. We sometimes have to take our chances.
