McCain’s campaign, like his life, has been marked by its embrace of living dangerously and by clear runs of fortune and disappointment.

In the past decade, he has played on Mississippi riverboats, on Indian land, in Caribbean craps pits and along the length of the Las Vegas Strip. Back in 2005 he joined a group of journalists at a magazine-industry conference in Puerto Rico, offering betting strategy on request. “Enjoying craps opens up a window on a central thread constant in John’s life,” says John Weaver, McCain’s former chief strategist, who followed him to many a casino. “Taking a chance, playing against the odds.” Aides say McCain tends to play for a few thousand dollars at a time and avoids taking markers, or loans, from the casinos, which he has helped regulate in Congress.

Michael Scherer and Michael Weisskopf are very delicate in their phrasing, but they appear to be reporting that John McCain has a serious gambling problem

  1. I agree McCain has alot of unknown qualities, but isnt that why he is called the Maverick cause he doesnt walk in line with anyone or any one thing ?

I just wrote a piece analyzing Barack Obama’s Europe Trip at

discover why the EU loves the messiah so much !!!!

  2. I agree McCain has alot of unknown qualities, but isnt that why he is called the Maverick cause he doesnt walk in line with anyone or any one thing”

We know that he is NOW a superstitious compulsive gambler with an anger management problem.

We know that he got into and barely through the Naval Academy because his father was a 4 star admiral (895th in a class of 899)

Ordinarily Maverick is not a favorable label. (except sometimes in the movies)

Were you aware that there is a difference between 20 years of experience and one year of experience 20 times?

  3. I just look at the guy and think, ‘man if you look at pictures of other president’s they seem to age incredibly fast.” Then I look at pictures of McCain (who reminds me of Uncle Creepy – especially when he opens his mouth to speak) and think god what’s he gonna like like after the first year? I mean he’s already 70!

Not an ageist but as much as I loved Ronald Regan he had alzheimers in his last term. /shudder.

  4. There are old men and there are old men. There are men like Warren Buffet who has been using his brain all of his life and is still sharp. Then there is John McCain who got propelled through the Navy by his 4 star admiral father. He milked his 23 combat missions and 5 years as a POW for all they were worth and spun out a war hero status that got him a career in the Senate.

Senators sit in committees and talk about things, get briefed by their staffs and they vote. McCain was no more diligent about understanding the issues as a Senator than he was at the Naval Academy where he graduated 5th from the bottomn of his class. Otherwise he would know more about economics and the difference between Sunnis, Shiites and Al Qaeda.

  5. And it is amazing to think that nearly all of pictures were completely destroyed in line. While she just said in unknown qualities. I took his father to see link.

  6. i doubt it fair to say that mccain isnt extremely knowledgeable and dedicated to his profession. Other than ted kennedy he is the greatest legislation buff in the Senate. if mccains and idiot why does everyone want to work with him in the senate. answer = they know the man is principled but a pragmatist and knows how to get stuff done.

obama has had his name tied to one ethics bill and one ethics bill alone.

  7. The US Senate is the most exclusive good old boys club in America. His salty blustery schtick has gotten him a place there. If one accepts without question what appears to me to be more myth than fact that he was a war hero , I can see why he has credibilty there. Maybe it makes the other Senators feel more macho to engage in “guy talk” with him. McCain got to where he got in the Navy mostly because his father and grandfather were four star admirals.

I am not struck with any wisdom in his pronouncements. I hear chauvanistic flag waving and tough talk.

What concerns me most are his quirks , personality traits and pastimes. He is a compulsive gambler who spends upwards of 15 hours at a time shooting craps at thousands of dollars per roll. He is superstitious and has an anger management problem. These things are bound to impact on decision making processes especially since his neurons are not working as well as they once did.

Obama has wisdom beyond his years.
