AP: Gov. Richardson Endorsing Obama
By BARRY MASSEY – 2 hours ago

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, the nation’s only Hispanic governor, is endorsing Sen. Barack Obama for president, calling him a “once-in-a-lifetime leader” who can unite the nation and restore America’s international leadership.

Richardson, who dropped out of the Democratic race in January, is to appear with Obama on Friday at a campaign event in Portland, Ore., The Associated Press has learned.

The governor’s endorsement comes as Obama leads among delegates selected at primaries and caucuses but with national public opinion polling showing Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton pulling ahead of him amid controversy over statements by his former pastor.

Richardson has been relentlessly wooed by Obama and Clinton for his endorsement. As a Democratic superdelegate, the governor plays a part in the tight race for nominating votes and could bring other superdelegates to Obama’s side. He also has been mentioned as a potential running mate for either candidate.

No primaries are scheduled until Pennsylvania’s on April 22, a gap in time Obama hopes to use for such announcements to assert that he is the front-runner for the nomination.

“I believe he is the kind of once-in-a-lifetime leader that can bring our nation together and restore America’s moral leadership in the world,” Richardson said in a statement obtained by the AP. “As a presidential candidate, I know full well Sen. Obama’s unique moral ability to inspire the American people to confront our urgent challenges at home and abroad in a spirit of bipartisanship and reconciliation.”

Richardson’s endorsement also could help Obama pick up support among Hispanics, who are the nation’s largest and fastest-growing minority.

Clinton has been the favorite of Hispanics in primaries and caucuses, according to exit polls. She won the New Mexico caucus in early February with a nearly 2-to-1 advantage among Hispanics.

Richardson backed Obama despite his ties to Clinton and her husband, the former president. He served as ambassador to the U.N. and as secretary of the Energy Department during the Clinton administration. Last month, Richardson and former President Clinton watched the Super Bowl together at the governor’s residence in Santa Fe.

Richardson praised Hillary Clinton as a “distinguished leader with vast experience.” But the governor said Obama “will be a historic and great president, who can bring us the change we so desperately need by bringing us together as a nation here at home and with our allies abroad.”

Richardson was a roving diplomatic troubleshooter when he was a congressman from New Mexico, negotiating the release of U.S. hostages in several countries and meeting with a rogue’s gallery of U.S. adversaries, including Saddam Hussein and Fidel Castro.

“There is no doubt in my mind that Barack Obama has the judgment and courage we need in a commander in chief when our nation’s security is on the line. He showed this judgment by opposing the Iraq war from the start, and he has show it during this campaign by standing up for a new era in American leadership internationally,” Richardson said.

Obama said he was “deeply honored” to have Richardson’s support.

“Whether it’s fighting to end the Iraq war or stop the genocide in Darfur or prevent nuclear weapons from falling into the hands of terrorists, Gov. Richardson has been a powerful voice on issues of global security, peace and justice, earning five Nobel Peace Prize nominations,” Obama said in a statement.

  3. The male contestant in the Democratic primaries has been after a number of endorsements. He went after John Edwards first and foremost and when Edwards rejected his advances he went to the next one. I personally could never vote for either of the two remaining Democrats because they call the killing of American in the womb abortion. I had a Congress man start yelling at me in a public place because I did not want to shake his hand because he was and is pro choice, but Like Father Frank, Who says this Congressman is not a Catholice although he claims to be one, call him and them like me Pro Death People. MaY GOD bless all of us,U.S. too, We love all
people, but we sure think that some of the things they say and do should land them in jail or they should resign for not doing the proper thing even though a pole of the constituants clearly show his district is clearly over 60 percent pro Life.
Poles taken have a 10 percent margin of error which leaves it at 54 percent in favor of Life for the Unborn Americans. or it coud be as high as 66%. Something does not compute in the minds of these people that say they are pro choice.

  4. I voted for the last president because he was prolife and i thought he was an example of a christian. Well, I soon learned that that was a mistake, look where it got us today! I dont care if someone is prolife or belives in abortion what really matters to me is if they can lead this country in to a better role model for the world.

I have learned all to well, it is far more important for me to choose a great leader regardless of what their religous beliefs are, because ultimately, it is God whom they have to deal with about their sins, not me.

But, as Americans we always want to tell people what they should believe in and who they should support, how they should talk, dress, act, do you get my point? Each of us pro life or pro choice all have faults, the real question is how do you deal with those faults.

It has been proven over and over again that many have said they were for one thing and changed their minds after they have accomplished their goals of getting elected. However, I am mature enough to know that no president or elected official will be able to do all they desire, because there is a peaking order that must be followed.

I will support Obama for president regardless of what his views are on things that are a personal choice for people. It is my responsiblity to not have an abortion if this is my belief and it is my decision to have an abortion if that is my decision. This decision is between me and my God, not me and my candidate, but the choice is mine to make and the God I serve will hold only me responsible. We need to stop trying to be the world’s Lord and let God be who is to the people that serve him.

So, forget about what a candidates take on prolife or pro choic and make a wise decision based on the candidates abilty to bring America back to greatness, God will do the rest.

  5. Obama wants abortions to be safe ,legal and RARE. Obama is not FOR abortion.I respect the opposing position on abortion. it truly is debateable.

Personally,as a male, I think that I should have nothing to say on the subject of abortion . I would be very comfortable with the prohibition of abortion if a majority of women in this counry voted against it. How dare men dictate what women do with teir bodies?

As a retired physician I understand that prior to 24 or so weeks of gestation, the fetus cannot survive out side the mother. How dare we force a women to carry to term an unwated growth in her body.

“Pro-lifers ” are not pro-birth rather than pro-life. They think that life begins at conception and ends at birth.

I am appauled by people who use abortion as a means of birth control and I do have some moral problems with abortion . Overall, I come down on the side of safe ,rare and legal.

WHAT IS MUCH LESS DEBATEABLE IS THE IRAQ WAR . That has had the result of the deaths of nearly 4000 alive, cognisant, fathers, mothers, children not to mention nearly 30,000 maimed for life.

IF IT WERE POSSIBLE FOR ME TO HAVE ABORTION OUTLAWED IN EXCHANGE FOR GETTING OUT OF IRAQ I WOULD CHOSE THAT.

APPARENTLY YOU WOULD PREFER TO CONTINUE THAT IRAQ FIASCO BECAUSE THE GOP IS OFFICIALLY AGAINST ABORTION.

Life begins at conception and ends at birth? I disagree with that.

  6. There’s no understanding of the Latino vote when it comes to the mainstream media. Overwhelmingly in favor of Sen. Obama, it is assumed that by partnering with Gov. Richards, the Latino vote will turn in his favor.

Wrong. First, out of the estimated 44 million Latinos in the US, an estimated 20 million are illegals, and therefore, not allowed to vote. According to the Pew Center for Hispanic Research, a mere 17 million are legal citizens, and therefore, registered voters. The rest are either minors or legal residents, who are not entitled to cast a vote.

Second, the Latino vote is as diverse as the composition of it. Not all Mexican-Americans will vote for Obama even if Richards is his running mate. The Cuban and most of the Central American vote will go to John McCain.

Third, Obama will be pestered till the elections because of his close relationship with racists like Wright, and others. This will not go away since he chose to put the blame on everbody, their neighbors and their dogs, but the culprits. Nobody stays in a church spewing hate for 20 years if they are not part of it.

As more revelations on this respect come to light, his skillful oratory will be less effective. After all, his slogan of leadership, unity, hope and all the other beautiful words he uses to address his campaign events are starting to sound hollow in view of his deeds. Also, his social progessive agenda and political leanings will be subject to a closer scrutiny, even though the mainstream media will try to ignore it and divert it.

His race speech was rethorically beautiful but raised more questions about his character and judgement than answers.

  7. I believe that now would be a good time for Big BILL that we call him here in NM, to move to Washington. His popularity here in NM is not all that, in fact, because of this endorsement NM may go RED. NM voted for Hillary but Big BILL went against us and voted for Big BILL. Please America that him back.

  8. Even if Richardson does not deliver the Hispanic vote to Obama, he would be a great VP.

I think that Obama and Richardson are the most qualified to lead this country regardless of race or ethnicity.

I think that secondarily each one could help the ethnicities from which they come. My wife ,myself and our kids are as blond, blue eyed and nordic as they come so I do not have any horse in that race.

One assumes that Richardson could bring in the Hispanic vote but maybe Gabriel and Latina are right.

  9. I am very happy to see Mr. Richardson involved with the campaign once again. He is a fine person, and an experienced foreign policy expert. I have admired him for years, and if he says Obama’s the real deal, then I just have to go along with him. Richardson is no fool, despite what the HRC campaign would have us believe. Richardson’s a good judge of people, otherwise he would not have had the success he’s had internationally, and in his own state of New Mexico. I don’t know what post he would be offered/accept, but he certainly would be an excellent replacement for Ms. Rice, who can’t keep her staff’s nose out of citizens’ personal records!

  10. Latina,

You need to listen to all of Jeremiah Wright’s sermons for the last 20 years, and then tell us why you feel those sound bites were the ONLY thing he said for 20 years! It’s absurd; you mentioned that the mainstream media doesn’t get the Latino community, well, if you believe what you said about those sermons, apparently they do! Your reaction is just what they hoped for. They expected you to believe what they showed you, without question.

Furthermore, anyone silly enough to believe that all Latinos will vote for Obama now that Bill is involved, is silly enough to believe that all Blacks will vote for Obama because he is black, too. I wouldn’t respect anyone who said that, nor would I take them seriously as a reporter/pundit/pollster, etc.

I think Richardson is a brilliant man, and he is not just a Latino. He’s got a lot more going for himself than just where he was born, and to put it like that really cheapens his experience and abilities. Latinos who don’t like Obama should and will vote for someone else, and that is their right.

You need to seriously examine your claim that someone should be judged by the pastor they keep; I don’t see you saying anything about Hagee, the minister that McCain was endorsed by-he hates/condemns Catholics all the time! Is this somehow more acceptable to you because Hagee and McCain are white?

In the final analysis, I ask you: what office is Jeremiah running for?
